Mozilla is developing a built\u2011in AI assistant for Firefox that will be offered as a third browsing mode alongside Normal and Private tabs. They\u2019re calling it \u201cWindow AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Details are still scarce. Based on Mozilla\u2019s official announcement<\/a> on Thursday (13th<\/sup>), it looks like a deeper implementation than the existing sidebar that gives access to third\u2011party chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, etc.). The post stresses the feature will be opt-in and that the user \u201cis in control.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a waitlist<\/a> to try the feature and a Mozilla forum thread inviting people to \u201chelp shape\u201d the initiative.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s safe to say that the people who volunteered to \u201cshape\u201d the initiative want it dead and buried<\/a>. Of the 52 responses at the time of writing, *all* rejected the idea and asked Mozilla to stop shoving AI features into Firefox.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know whether the negative reactions reflect the majority of Firefox users or are just a noisy minority. Mozilla, after all, likely has a clearer view of the whole user base.<\/p>\n

What strikes me as odd is the decision to position itself as just another AI\u2011enabled web browser<\/a>, picking a fight with big techs and better\u2011funded startups whose users are less hostile (and sometimes enthusiastic) about adding AI to web browsing.<\/p>\n

Mozilla seems to be trying to wedge itself between those who reject AI and those who want generative\u2011AI features in the browser \u2014 trying to please everyone \u2014 as this excerpt from the post shows:<\/p>\n

We see a lot of promise in AI browser features making your online experience smoother, more helpful, and free from the everyday disruptions that break your flow. But browsers made by AI companies ask you to make a hard choice \u2014 either use AI all the time or don\u2019t use it at all.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re focused on making the best browser, which means recognizing that everyone has different needs. For some, AI is part of everyday life. For others, it\u2019s useful only occasionally. And many are simply curious about what it can offer, but unsure where to start.<\/p>\n

Regardless of your choice, with Firefox, you\u2019re in control.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Those unhappy have another option: use an AI\u2011free Firefox fork such as LibreWolf<\/a>, Waterfox<\/a>, or Zen Browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n
